"Ever since 1975, Porsche had always gotten round to offering a turbocharged 911 and by March 1996, the forced induction 993 was introduced. Featuring full time four wheel drive for the first time on a production 911 Turbo. Huge cross-drilled and ventilated disc brakes and calipers were sourced from the 3.8-litre Carrera RS along with improved ABS 5. The anti-roll bars were thicker than regular 993’s, new 18-inch two piece wheels improving brake cooling. Starting with the regular 3.6-litre engine, Porsche fitted a pair of KKK K16 turbochargers and Bosch M5.2 engine management. Output jumped to 408bhp at 5750rpm. Compression was dropped to 8.0:1 and the reinforced six-speed gearbox fitted with taller ratios. Performance was explosive with a top speed of 184mph and 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds. Like all turbocharged 911’s, this latest variant received heavily flared wheelarches and a static rear spoiler. Unique to these cars, the body-coloured rear wings were fixed in place and housed the turbocharger intercoolers. At the front, a new valance housed a prominent central duct flanked either side by supplementary vents. The wheelarches were squared-off at the base to merge with the deep side sills and gave an even more purposeful stance. For the 1997 model year, Porsche produced the most exclusive road going 993 of all and what became the last air-cooled 911 Turbo - the Turbo S." - www.topspeed.com

"
Like the crowd-pleasing attributes of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, the fundamental ethos behind Porsches doesn't seem to change much from year to year, even if the cars themselves do. There are few cars on the road that are as recognizable as the 911. Its low, long hood and muscular haunches seem to have barely changed since it was first introduced nearly 40 years ago. Dial 911 for Excitement" - www.forbesautos.com

"An absolutely astonishing car. It's spectacularly fast thanks to 408 bhp, immensely useable thanks to permanent four wheel drive, and totally reliable thanks to a level of build quality which has to be seen to be believed. The sheer grip and unflappability of the chassis makes my old R33 Skyline look stupid, which is the highest possible compliment that you could pay to a car. Yet it has none of the electronic trickery to help it. You simply turn the wheel and it goes where you point it. Come streaming rain, high winds or sleet, this car is impeccably behaved, yet can be provoked into lairy oversteer if you feel like destroying a £450 pair of rear tyres. It's tricky on the road though because of the silly speeds you need to be doing in order to break grip. Performance is astonishing. It's hard to describe the sensation as the twin turbo flat six snarls and whistles its way through the gears. It feels as if a giant, unseen hand has scooped you up and propelled you toward the horizon with brutal yet strangely civilised force. It's amazing, and even two years on, it still gives the same stab of adrenaline fuelled excitement that it gave when I first dropped it a cog and floored it on the test drive. Only a well ridden superbike or a handful of specialist British manufacturers cars would be significantly quicker in the dry, and in the wet, it will simply squat and leave them for dead! Running costs are actually surprisingly reasonable. Fuel consumption averages between 18 and 30 mpg depending on use, and reliability is flawless. Servicing is not horrendous either considering the superb ability and attention to detail of the dealers. A stunning and pretty all-rounder which is outrageously fast, yet civilised enough for daily use. A triumph! - www.carsurvey.org
