Boone Is Named One of Four North American Adventure Destinations - In 2005, Boone was recognized by travel journalists as the ultimate outdoor adventure destination in the Southeast, even in North America. Along with Durango, Colorado, Bend, Oregon and North Vancouver, British Columbia, Boone, North Carolina was selected as one of four multi-sport vacation destinations in North America, featured in an article in the May 2005 issue of Adventure Sports Magazine.
Nestled in a breathtaking valley amidst some of the oldest, most scenic mountains in the world, the Boone area offers scenic country roads, cascading waterfalls, wildlife, and an unsurpassed botanical paradise filled with a variety of plants matched by few places on Earth.

Schumaker praises Boone as a “hallowed gem of outdoor adventure” and says there are dozens of opportunities for adventures and “seemingly endless” trails for hiking, running and biking. Backpacking and camping in the area are not to be missed, he says.  - www.visitboonenc.com

Into mountain biking? The 200 miles of trails in the Pisgah National Forest just south of Boone are a mountain biking “wonderland,” according to Schumaker, who recommends Yancey’s Ridge, a 14-mile loop near Linville. Within the town limits of Boone, trails endorsed by the author include the trails, such as the Greenway Trail, on the wooded preserve owned by Appalachian State University, as well as the section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail which runs right through town on its 900-plus-mile jaunt across the state of North Carolina.  - www.visitboonenc.com

With “hundreds of miles” of byways and trails “and some of the highest peaks in the East…Boone has a little something for everyone. - www.visitboonenc.com

The Land Where Christmas Trees Grow
The High Country area is one of the country’s top producers of Christmas Trees. Of the variety of evergreens, the growers’ most popular choice is the Fraser Fir. It is touted as the “Cadillac of Christmas Trees” because of its strong boughs, long needle retention, and fragrant scent. The annual Christmas In July Festival celebrates the Christmas tree growing industry with equipment displays and decorated Fraser Firs lining the streets of West Jefferson. Crafts and entertainment are also available during the three-day event. The Choose & Cut event held annually beginning the day after Thanksgiving and running through mid-December has become an important tradition for many families. Each year families make a trek to the mountains to choose the perfect Christmas tree for their holiday celebration. The day begins with a trip to the tree farm where many farmers serve hot chocolate or spiced apple cider and holiday cookies. From there it's on to the rows of firs to search for that perfect tree and to enjoy the fresh mountain air. You can cut your own tree or the farmers will assist. It is then baled and loaded on your car. A variety of fresh greenery and wreaths are also available along with local crafts. Some farms have petting zoos, and a team of horses to bring the trees off the mountainside to the baling machine. Call 828-264-3061 for additional information. - www.visitboonenc.com

Crafts

Many crafts in the High Country were borne from necessity. Today, however, they are beautiful assets to any home. Traditional crafts and crafters abound. Quilting, pottery, weaving, instrument making, and arts and crafts of all mediums are thriving. - www.visitboonenc.com

Craft Festivals
Throughout the year, the High Country hosts many craft festivals, both juried and non-juried. One of the most popular series of craft shows is Art in the Park, which is held in Blowing Rock, one designated Saturday a month from May to October. The Valle Crucis Country Fair, Woolly Worm Festival and Cove Creek Farm Heritage Days are other popular festivals that showcase crafts of the indigenous residents. - www.visitboonenc.com

General Stores
In many communities, the old-timey general store which was the source of goods and community gossip for our grandparents is gone and just a misty memory. In the High Country, however, at least four general stores carry on the tradition of supplying everything needed for a self-sufficient community. Mast General Store (828-963-6511), in Valle Crucis, has been in almost continuous operation since 1883; Todd General Store (336-877-1067), in the small community of Todd, has been operating since 1914 and was first established to help supply a logging town that was closely linked to the arrival of a spur line off of the Norfolk and Western Railroad. The Old Hampton Store (828-733-5213) was also linked to a logging operation, when the area around Linville was called “Stumptown.” The owners still grind the Hampton Store brand of cornmeal and buckwheat flour in a waterwheel-operated gristmill. The newest general store is Fred’s General Mercantile (828-387-4838), situated atop Beech Mountain. Even though it was not established until 1979, it captures the true atmosphere of the general store. - www.visitboonenc.com

The Skiing
Some of the best skiing in the South happens right here in the High Country. The High Country’s ski resorts are not dependent upon natural snow to create their bases, but instead rely on man’s technological advances in snow-making (a forceful blending of very cold air and water) to lay a blanket of white on the mountains. In one night a covering of four to six inches can be put on a slope. The ski resorts in the area are: Appalachian Ski Mtn (828-295-7828); Ski Beech (828-387-2011), the highest ski resort in the Eastern United States; Ski Sugar (828-898-5256); and Ski Hawksnest (828-963-6563) which offers the longest tubing run, as well as skiing and snowboarding. - www.visitboonenc.com

The Linn Cove Viaduct
About 50 years after the Blue Ridge Parkway was started, it was completed with a seven-mile segment referred to as the Linn Cove Section. This short section contains one of the most technologically advance sections of roadway in the United States. The Linn Cove Viaduct is constructed in such a manner so as not to disturb the delicate ecosystem around the south side of Grandfather Mountain. It was constructed from the top down of 151 sections of pre-cast concrete, held together with epoxy and steel cable –and only one tree had to be taken during the process. - www.visitboonenc.com

High Country Trails
Many trails in the High Country are significant in the history of the region and some even in the history of the entire country. One of the oldest trails is the Buffalo Trail, used previously by Native Americans and white settlers. The Overmountain Victory Trail of Revolutionary War fame also cuts through the area and has the distinction of carrying a National Historic Trail designation. The Appalachian Trail crosses Yellow Mountain, Hump Mountain and Roan Mountain then goes through the Unakas on its way through the High Country. The Tanawha Trail stretches along the southern slope of Grandfather Mountain and runs concurrent with the Linn Cove section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. - www.visitboonenc.com

An Appalachian Summer Festival
The festival takes place each summer during the month of July and features the North Carolina Symphony, which makes its summer home in Boone. Events that are part of An Appalachian Summer include: workshops (e.g., dulcimer or painting); chamber concerts (Broyhill Chamber Ensemble); the North Carolina Dance Theatre; a sculpture display and contest and much more. For more information on the festival call 1-800-841-ARTS. - www.visitboonenc.com
