Little Switzerland
The Blue Ridge Parkway

Whether it’s relaxing with a good book or browsing among the treasures in the shops of Little Switzerland, North Carolina, there’s plenty to do and see here. As each season unfolds its splendor before your eyes, opportunity abounds for recreation in and around the Little Switzerland area. Hike to the top of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the East, or through the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. Grandfather Mountain is close as well. Golf on courses with breathtaking mountain views. Enjoy day excursions or horseback riding, gem mining, and trout fishing. Visit craft centers like Penland, theme parks such as Tweetsie Railroad, and the Biltmore Estate. Take a swim, explore a waterfall, or treat yourself to an ice cream. It’s all nearby Little Switzerland!
Quaint in the best sense of the word, it is both frozen in time and country sophisticated.
On any given day there are likely to be a world-class collection of Harley-Davidsons, Sportscars, and Southern Belles from Charleston. Little Switzerland, on the Blue Ridge Parkway has the distinction of being the only village on the Parkway's 469 mile length. It was preserved because of its unique setting and history.

It was June, 1909. Grassy Mountain rose steep in front of them as the three men guided their mules cautiously over the rough turf that covered the mountainside. As they reached the open grasslands of the top, the instigator of this trip drew in the reins of his mount and sat gazing in disbelief. From all sides, as far as the eye could see, they were surrounded by an incredible dream of misty blue mountains and green valleys. To the west, Mount Mitchell, the Black Brothers, and Celo; to the south, Linville Mountain, Turkey Cove, the valley of North Fork of the Catawba River, and, in the distance, the South Mountains; to the east and the northeast, Table Rock, Hawksbill and Grandfather; and to the north, almost obscured by the brow of the mountain they were on and by the tops of chestnut trees, Roan.

Thus Little Switzerland was named because of its sweeping panoramas of deep valleys and distant ranges resemble those of the foothills of the Swiss Alps.

Mount Mitchell State Park

www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/momi/home.html
There are a few places in the world that still stand apart from the ordinary. Rising more than a mile high, surrounded by the gentle mist of low-hanging clouds, Mount Mitchell State Park is one of these extraordinary places. In the crest of the timeworn Black Mountains lies the summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. For those who ascend this mighty peak, what looms in the horizon is a feast for the eyes—breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling ridges and fertile valleys. Forested and forever misty, 1,855-acre Mount Mitchell State Park will provide you with some of the most tranquil moments you'll ever experience.

North Carolina Waterfalls
www.ncwaterfalls.com
Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on Earth - the mountains of western North Carolina. There are hundreds of waterfalls and miles of hiking trails in this area and you could spend a lifetime trying to see everything. I got a late start and didn't begin hiking until 1998. That's when friends invited me up to their mountain home in Lake Toxaway to hike to some of the waterfalls in the area. My first falls were Drift, Turtleback and Rainbow along the Horsepasture River, and I've been hooked ever since. The scenery was so spectacular that I decided to put up a web site to share the beauty. Like most of the Great Outdoors, photos don't do the real thing justice, but they do allow you to catch a glimpse of a part of Nature that you might have otherwise missed
