Nestled high in the mountains of the Western North Carolina
High-Country is a valley, a special corner of the world, called
Valle Crucis (pronounced valley crew sis). The Valle Crucis
Community, North Carolina's First Rural Historic District,
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
First settled over 200 years ago, the Vale of the Cross is a
place that historians and visitors alike have called "uncommon."
Discover our
historic
inns and bed and breakfasts, offering a relaxing stay
with comfortable lodging and memorable meals in this peaceful
valley. Explore the Valle Crucis Conference Center and Holy
Cross Episcopal Church, both on the grounds of the historic
Mission School in the upper valley. Visit what Charles Kuralt
called "a destination," the original
Mast
General Store. The General Store is now joined by other
shops, studios, and galleries throughout the community featuring
locally made pottery, rustic furniture, and original art. Locate
cabin rentals and horseback riding stables. Find out about
activities, camps, and places for retreats for from one to one
hundred — all here in Valle Crucis. Located in Watauga County
near Blowing Rock & Boone, only hours from the hustle and bustle
of the big city, day and weekend getaways are possible, but we
are sure you'll return eventually for a much longer stay.

Valle Crucis, North
Carolina has been attracting settlers and travelers alike,
for nearly 200 years. Guarded by some of the highest peaks
of southern Appalachia, the Valle Crucis stretch of the
Watauga River Valley retains an air of simplicity lost to
most places generations ago.
The lovely old farmhouse was built for the C.D. Taylor
family in 1911. It received extensive renovation in 1987 and
2006 and is now "home" to hundreds of travelers.
The Taylor House Inn is known for offering romantic
getaways, hosting fabulous family reunions, corporate
retreats and some of the best weddings in Valle Crucis. With
the majestic surrounding valley scene and the beautiful herb
garden, it is the perfect place to spend some quality time
as well as to host an outdoor event. We invite you to
recapture a wonderful time with us in the beautiful Historic
Valle Crucis; experience a place that seems one of times
past, a place where moments of solitude are as abundant as
the rivers and streams that give life to the surrounding
hills. We feel fortunate to be part of such a powerful place
and would like to extend our hospitality to help share the
magic of Valle Crucis.

Along the Mission
Crossing Scenic By-way, you'll discover an enchanted river
valley, rustic countryside, and a place Charles Kuralt
called "a destination." That place is the Mast General Store
in the rural historic district of Valle Crucis. Since 1883,
we've been outfitting the Appalachians with traditional
mercantile goods, comfortable clothing, rugged footwear and
quality outdoor gear for all mountain seasons. When in the
North Carolina High Country, we invite you to warm up by our
potbellied stove, mail a letter at our antique post office
and discover for yourself why...Some times are too good to
leave behind.

Valle Crucis is located high in the
Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. North
Carolina's only Rural Historic District, the community
of Valle Crucis is easily accessible to its
neighboring towns of
Boone,
Blowing Rock and
Banner Elk, and to the
Blue
Ridge Parkway. The
High Country Host operates the
area Welcome Center in Boone and is a source of information
on the larger area.
The major airports servicing this area, Greensboro and
Charlotte, NC, are about 2 hours driving time (the smaller
Tri-Cities in TN is about an hour away). We have provided
the following maps of the area to assist you in finding us:
Valle Crucis,
North Carolina's High Country,
Boone,
Blowing Rock,
Banner Elk, and
West Jefferson.
There is a lot to fill your day while visiting Valle Crucis.
You can start with a bike ride on Watauga River Road or, for
a quieter pursuit, bird watching at the Valle Crucis
Community Park, do some shopping at the
Mast General Store
(in operation
since 1883), lunch at Creekside Deli in the General Store
Annex, or hike to the Lower Crab Orchard waterfall at the
Valle Crucis Conference Center
(the old Episcopal Mission). Then enjoy some quiet time
rocking on the porch or stolling in the gardens of
The Mast Farm Inn. Stop in at
their newly opened
Espresso and Wine Bar
downstairs in the historic farmhouse for a coffee or cold
drink.
Alta Vista Gallery is Valle
Crucis' own fine art gallery, featuring over 100 artists and
showing one of the area's largest selections of mountain
landscapes - originals in oil and watercolor, as well as
prints. The gallery represents local artists, as well as
folk artist Will Moses, great-grandson of Grandma Moses.
Down Broadstone Road a little ways is artist Mark Read's
Studio and Gallery. His works include a wide range of
handwrought art and metalsmithing: fine jewelry, bronze and
iron sculptures, and architectural structures.
As you might expect, a wide range of lodging choices are
availabile in Valle Crucis.
The Mast Farm Inn
is a
full-service country inn, with a choice of farmhouse rooms
or private getaway cottages. The Inn's restaurant, which
serves dinner and is open to the public, features fresh,
organic
Contemporary Regional Cuisine.
And,
Aunt Josie's Espresso and Wine Bar,
in the farmhouse of The Mast Farm Inn, provides the perfect
place to relax with a glass of wine, a cappuccino, a cherry
coke, or a cold beer. Appetizers are available with drinks
during dinner hours.
The
Taylor House Inn, a wonderful
spot for a mountain destination wedding, is around the
corner on Scenic Byway 194 toward Banner Elk. And in a
pastoral setting by the Watauga River is the
Baird House, a small
family-run B&B.
Alta Vista Bed and Breakfast,
located on Broadstone Road between The Mast Farm Inn and the
Mast Store Annex, is also home to Alta Vista Fine Art
Gallery. The front porch of this historic brick farmhouse
overlooks the valley and mountains beyond.
Three more small family-run bed and breakfasts have opened
in Valle Crucis in the last year or so to further add to
your lodging choices.
Valle Crucis Bed and Breakfast
and
Mountainside Lodge Bed and Breakfast
are on Broadstone Road, and
Lazy Bear Lodge
is a short drive down Dewitt Barnett
Road, across the low-water bridge, from Broadstone. Or
seclude yourself in the hills with a cabin rental from
Valle Crucis Log Cabin Rentals.
To continue on your outing, put on your new hiking boots from
the General Store and head for
Grandfather Mountain, NC's most
famous tourist attraction. Then maybe you can cool off in the
white-water rapids of the area with a
fully
guided rafting trip, or go
horseback riding with
Dutch Creek Trails. And if the sky
is the limit, then tie into a rope and head for the rocks, rock
climbing that is. You can find all these activities within a
short drive from your destination of Valle Crucis.
