ClubFerdinand Explore North Carolina behind the wheel of our collection of new Porsches and discover a whole new level of freedom

If There's Such Thing As A Real World Supercar, Porsche's 911 Turbo Is It. With A Power Upgrade To 450bhp, The Turbo S Variant Ups The Desirability Factor Still Further.... Performance is predictably electrifying... Porsche often err on the conservative side when quoting performance figures, so when they state that the Turbo S is good for a top speed of 191mph and 0-60mph in 4 seconds flat, you can get some idea of this cars awesome potential. A clearer yardstick of its muscle is the 0-100mph sprint which it notches off in nine seconds - the same as the heavier but more powerful and expensive Lamborghini Gallardo.

"Kirk Stingle, my favorite Porsche salesman, describes the 911 as
the 'Swiss Army knife of sports cars'. It can cruise, thrash, potter, pose, park and ferry in all weathers, with equal aplomb. Get jiggy with the options list, and you'll enjoy all the latest luxury car toys and creature comforts.... Power. And so, on the seventh day, the zealots of Zuffenhausen created the 911 Turbo. And on the eighth day, they created the Power Pack. These factory enhancements increase the engine's peak output from a not inconsiderable 420bhp, to a monumental 450bhp. The zero to sixty time sinks to 3.79 seconds. Porsche calls the extra oomph an 'option', but c'mon, you know it isn't... If the Turbo's go-pedal is a fast forward button, its brake pedal is, near as dammit, pause. The Turbo will stop from 60mph in just 2.4 seconds. I'm told there's no danger of your retinas detaching if you slam on anchors at serious speeds, but I'm not convinced. Anyway, if a car's only as good as its brakes, the Porsche Turbo is about as good as it gets... Yes, I hear them: the owners of rally-bred exotica boasting that their machines can out-corner a 911 Turbo. At the risk of doubling my negatives, I'm not saying they can't. But the ones that can match the Turbo's speed can't match its cornering. The ones that can match its cornering don't have its speed. And the ones that claim to match both don't have the Turbo's user-friendliness. Even Sunday drivers can exploit and enjoy the Porsche Turbo's extreme levels of grip and poise.... In fact, the Porsche Turbo is the safest fast car made. "  - Robert Farago - www.truthaboutcars.com

"If There's Such Thing As A Real World Supercar, Porsche's 911 Turbo Is It. A clearer yardstick of its muscle is the 0-100mph sprint which it notches off in nine seconds - the same as the heavier but more powerful and expensive Lamborghini Gallardo." - Andy Enright  - http://uk.yahoo.com

"The vital statistics of the Turbo S are impressive. Power is raised by 30bhp to 450bhp, and pulling power leaps to 457 lbs from 413. This increase in engine responsiveness manifests itself particularly during in-gear acceleration – which is stunning. The engine delivers these remarkable figures courtesy of larger turbochargers, modified intercoolers and revised engine management electronics. Additionally, the six speed manual transmission has been strengthened to handle the torque increase... The brakes of the 911 Turbo S have also been up rated similarly. Fitted as standard are the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) system, offering a 50% weight reduction per wheel over the conventional steel brake disc equivalent, as well as superior fade resistance characteristics under heavy braking." - www.topspeed.com

"More impressive still is that the S doesn't lose even a scrap of accelerative force to wheelspin; it simply hunkers down and rips angrily into the tarmac, shrink-wrapping distances in the process. There's wonderful steering feel, too, and despite the four-wheel drive and wide body it still manages to feel delicate and wieldy. You get a wonderfully lucid picture of the rear engine working for you through a corner and with time you can maximise the advantages that the unique layout offers. Even less confident drivers will appreciate the way the car interacts and adjusts its balance with every input. We're talking about precise, subtle shifts in weight, however, rather than grand gestures. The S, like any 911 and particularly the Turbo, is not a car you slide around on the road with any regularity. Not unless your name's Walter Röhrl, anyway. You simply drive within its massive limits and enjoy the sensations through steering and seat. - Jethro Bovingdon & Andy Morgan - www.evo.co.uk

Is reliability the ultimate measure of a high performance car? Of course not. Otherwise, the Porsche Turbo would be in a class of one. But reliability is certainly an important safety consideration for anyone who intends on using their exotic as God intended. And it jibes with the age old question: what’s the world’s best car? One that starts. - Don Vorderman -www.thetruthaboutcars.com

"Here's looking at you kid, The Porsche 911 Turbo S 996"
You really have to wonder how Porsche designers do it to us. They are magic and I gotta guess one mean set of hooligans pretending to be engineers dressed in white short-sleeved shirts. Put down those clipboards guys, the jig is up and we have your number. We know you lust in your hearts for Ingrid Bergmann, and it shows in your metal.

Those guys get up every day dreaming of Ingrid, toss together a bunch of clay, goof around with it for a while till the boss man says "basta", to which they rebelliously respond "Ingrid Lives", and presto, we are done for. We pull out our checkbooks, and pull on our helmets enabling the wife's rolling pin to find comfort and relief over our curved fiberglass, all the while maintaining our grey matter intact. Sort of...

Lord have merci on our feeble souls, do you just not love staring at Ingrid Bergman and Porsches, and not necessarily in that order.

There is something paralyzing about sculpture as an art form that 2 dimensional art just does not muster. Sorry Cezanne. How do they make us dream so. Who knew the Germans were renaissance Italians in wolf's clothing.

Something like a 911 Turbo S can only come from a serious obsession with infinite perfection from the skin down to the sub-atomic level. Those damn things are just devastating. Magic I tell you.

Is there really another carmaker as obsessed with detail, as in-depth, over the long-haul? I think not.

The 911 Turbo S is so sweet, we want to like it despite it's bad boy cowlick, the rolled up sleeves carrying a pack of Luckies, and its hair-trigger temper. We have a weakness for it. We want to be it's high-school buddy. We think it can be reformed, tamed and domesticated. Right. Dream on. It will take your soul and make it flee in glee to a new world of its own.

Of course we always have an opinion about that little flaw in the design which endears but infuriates us anyway. The new wheels on the new 997 Turbo for example. What were they thinking. Now I get it, that's how they do it at Porsche... perfect is never good enough. And since to err is human and to forgive divine they leave that one imperfect atom so we don't feel so humbled by their manifest superiority. Those hooligans are diplomats.

Yep, that Turbo S one unique little monster, but oh so lovable. I guess the S stands for when Bergmann makes Bogie "S"illy in Paris.

And that my friends is before you hit the ignition, there is no describing what it's like behind the wheel when you are driving in the countryside, with or without Ingrid, so on that we will have to remain silent, pleading the 5th.

"Here's Looking at you Kid"

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is above all "The Start of a Beautiful Friendship".
